Trondheim's housing stock is unusually varied for a Norwegian city: protected timber townhouses in Bakklandet and Møllenberg, interwar brick in Singsaker, post-war villas across Byåsen, and new low-energy apartments on Lade and Nyhavna. Each brings a different problem.

In the older wooden districts the constraint is almost always the existing masonry chimney — sound outside, unusable inside. Relining it in steel is usually cheaper and far less invasive than the rebuild people expect to be quoted. In protected buildings we work to the municipality's requirements on external appearance, which rules out most roof-mounted steel terminals.

In the newer apartments the constraint is the opposite: no stack at all and a very airtight envelope. That points towards a balanced-flue gas fire or an external wall penetration, with a dedicated combustion air duct so the fire is not fighting the ventilation system.
